Whet your travel appetite![]()
I found The Travel Book by Lonely Planet to be an intriguing book. Keep in mind that it is small in height but certainly not in thickness. The book has 887 pages and is intended to be a type of reference book, not a travel guide. The idea was to spend four pages on each country in the world and offer the reader enough information and pictures both to entice their imagination and to function as a starting point for selecting a trip. The book covers 231 countries plus 13 bonus destinations. Admittedly, four pages per country are not enough to educate you about a destination but it can certainly whet your appetite. Pick the book up once in a while and read about a country you have just heard mentioned in the news. Look up places your friends are visiting. The book can serve as a good starting point.
For each country the following sections are used:
A paragraph introduction
Best Time to Visit
Essential Experiences
Getting Under the Skin (Suggestions for additional media resources)
In a Word (Greetings or commonly used expressions)
Trademarks (products associated with the country)
Surprises
They also include a broad scale map of each country showing important towns. Then five or six photos are shown for each country.
All in all, I find The Travel Book to be useful and interesting. Lonely Planet has come up with a good idea.
A Good Coffee Table Book![]()
Ok, one thing this book is not, it is NOT for the person who travels alot. This is one thick book. Very nice photography with little blurbs about what is in the photos. Each country gets two pages to highlight it. That's it. Like I said, this is a nice book to have hanging around an office, on a table or just to flip through when you're boored.
Here is an example, Brunei. It get one big photo filling the left hand page, two smaller photos on the right and info on the best time to visit, a list of essential experiences (five items), tells you the capital city, total population, area in square miles and language. Nothing in depth, just a nice overview.
Quick travel![]()
This compact book is full of wonderful photos and facts about every country in the world as well as other interesting travel locations. I appreciated the world map, which marks every country, as well as the individual maps on the countries' pages. Each locations also provides essential facts, such as capital, language, and population, and gives recommended reading and listening choices for those who want to learn more about each place. It's a great way to take a fast trip around the world while sitting at home or to provide a stack of travel brochures from which to choose your next vacation destination.
