My daughter loved this book. It is suitable for anyone of reading age, we enjoy it as much as she does. Also, the same book was over double the price at the book store.

    perfect for little geographers5
My 6 year old son got this for his birthday and he loves it. Every night he reads about different countries. And lets me know the capital, languages spoken and population of each country (among other things). I am learning a lot from this too! There is a lot of information packed into this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone that is a lover of the fascinating world of geography.

    Yosemite and the High Sierra

    Yosemite and the High Sierra

    Yosemite and the High Sierra

For sixty years, Ansel Adams photographed among the great peaks of Yosemite National Park and the High Sierra range: the "range of light." Inspired by their grandeur, their wildness, and their primeval mystery, he made photographs that were to become the icons of America's national park ethic. His reverence for these places—the same reverence that fueled his commitment to environmental activism—illuminates each image. Yosemite Falls, the brooding majesty of Half Dome—we can no longer experience these "holy places" without seeing them through Ansel Adams' eyes.

During his lifetime Adams published seven books of images from this region; this new book brings together in a single volume the finest photographs from this vast body of work. Alive with anecdote and insight, his writings serve as backdrop for the images, and John Szarkowski's introduction provides testimony to the enduring impact of Adams' Yosemite vision.

    terrible packaging3
I give the book five stars, but Amazon's shipping department about two stars. The book was shrink-wrapped, but the bottom right edges of all pages were bent from bouncing around in a box that was WAY too big. Hey Jeff B. - please spend less time on Kindle and more time on quality control and customer satisfaction. Regular Amazon customers know that mine is not the first or only complaint about poor shipping practices. (And yes, the book itself is beautiful...)

Saint Ansel, Who Art in Heaven, Hallowed Be Thy Name5
Ansel Adams is SO, like, awesome!!!

These photographs are simply breathtaking! Ansel Adams had this uncanny knack for taking the beautiful mountains, trees, clouds and waterways of the High Sierras, and making them look beautiful. It's so amazing contemplating an Ansel Adams photograph: How he took something only visually stunning and transforming it into something so visually stunning is simply astounding!

    How DID he do that?

    Exceeded my Expextations5
This is a beautiful book. I suspect the pints are as high in quality as Ansel would have wished them.
I'm glad I bought this book and will enjoy the pictures contained within it for many years.

    Amazon.com Review
Mexico is a heady sort of place; it inundates you with sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile sensations. A dry text, no matter how informative, just doesn't do justice to Mexico's allure. DK's Eyewitness Travel Guide series, on the other hand, does. Sure, it provides the necessary data points. The "Travelers' Needs" section contains 168 recommended hotel options and another 168 restaurants--as well as a beautifully illustrated guide to the foods of Mexico. And there are pages of practical information on visas, health precautions, time zones, electricity, taxis, security, banking, communications, and the like.

But DK's guide provides far more inspirational than a mere collection of data. The two-page glossy color map of Mexico is not just clear and easy to understand, it's beautiful. The hundreds of color photographs throughout the book are exquisite, depicting the sere hilltop archeological site of Monte Albán, fishermen preparing nets on a Yucatán beach, the vibrancy of a fruit market in San Cristóbal de las Casas, the green lushness of the wetlands, the scrub of the Sonora desert, and the intense vegetation of the Tehuantepec rainforests. There are 3-D aerial-view layouts of towns and ancient sites, cutaways and floor plans for churches and pyramids, as well as wonderful explanatory texts for each region, delving into history, traditions, sights, fiestas, foods, music, and activities. DK's is a guide book that is actually a pleasure to use--one that adds excitement to the necessary task of planning your vacation. --Stephanie Gold

The color pictures make this a keeper!4
As with all the Eyewitness travel books, this serves as our guide when we travel internationally. The Mexico book covers the entire country, with a very good overview of sites to see. We used this to plan our trip to Teotihuacan (which we took) and the Mayan ruins near the Yucatan peninsula (which we plan on seeing on a later trip). I think the only thing lacking is that restaurants in the area were not covered in enough detail.

Use this guide with online research/travel boards, and you will be able to plan the perfect trip!

    Not exactly what I needed.3
I have purchased several DK Eyewitness Travel Guides through the years to help plan foreign excursions. They have always been most helpful. I was planning a trip to Monterrey, Mexico, so I purchased this guide. The guide has wonderful information on many topics. Monterrey isn't one of those topics. There were three small paragraphs on the third largest city in Mexico, and no restaurant of lodging recommendations. I wasted my money.

    Wonderful guide book4
I love the pictures that DK uses in their books. The book is very informative and covers allot of ground. It was helpful to me on my trip but like everything else I wish it had more information on certain areas.

Mr. Brabbs takes the reader on a photographic pilgrimage to the famed cathedral, following the routes from four traditional starting points of the journey in France, across the Pyrenees Mountains, during the Middle Ages. Along the way, he shows us what travelers today would see but also Christian landmarks, such as the fortified bridge over the Gave de Pau, that 14th century pilgrims would have been likely to encounter. The images and the unusual nature of the enterprise make it an appealing work. --Wall Street Journal

This is the essential companion for those who have made or intend to make this inspirational journey, not to mention those who prefer to participate in its pleasures and joys from the comfort of their armchairs. --Universe

    Beautiful Memories of the Journey5
At last: Here is a beautiful coffee-table photo book of the Camino. The color photos brought back many wonderful memories of my journey across Spain. A perfect gift for your beloved...

    A Tour de Force5
This book is a Tour de Force. I've known about it for a few months now, but didn't expect to ever see it, because of the price. Fortunately someone, knowing my desire to read all things on the Camino, arranged to have it appear as a Christmas gift.

This is a gorgeous book, sized for coffee table display, and full of color photos. Most coffee table books are full of pictures with a few lines of descriptive text. The text in The Roads to Santiago could stand on its own as a work on pilgrimage architecture and history. It clearly was an immense amount of work to write. I wish the authors or publishers had seen fit to mention how long it to complete.

The definitive work still in print on the Camino de Santiago is Gitlitz and Davidson The Pilgrimage Road to Santiago: The Complete Cultural Handbook. That work covers the architecture and history within the borders of Spain. Imagine Gitlitz and Davidson, in color, with bigger and better photos, including the four pilgrim routes through France, and you have some idea of The Roads to Santiago.

This four pound book is something I recommend to someone who has walked the Camino de Santiago, and is thirsty for more information. A few hours with this book and you will be thinking about booking a trip to France and starting down one of the French chemins.

    Great impressions4
Although you can find books of any kind about the now so popular roads to Santiago, this one adds value by its beautiful pictures and well written impressions that go along them.
Especially, if you didn't take a camera along your own camino, this book is an addition.
It brought quite some memories back to my mind.
And it makes me long for other roads.

An absolute must companion to the Chicago traveler5
One of America's most culturally rich cities, Chicago has much to offer the person out on the town. "Walking Chicago: 31 Tours of the Windy City's Classic Bars, Scandalous Sites, Historic Architecture, Dynamic Neighborhoods, and Famous Lakeshore" is a travel guide showing what one can really enjoy in Chi-town when exploring the historic city on foot. The nightlife, history, beautiful views, and so much more are advertised, making a trip to Chicago very appealing. "Walking Chicago" is an absolute must companion to the Chicago traveler.

Look forward to walks in the summer! 5
Got this book for my sister for Christmas - she and her husband read through parts of it right away and are looking forward to when the weather gets a bit better so we can head into the city and try out some of the tours. Looks like fun!
Walking Chicago: 31 Tours of the Windy City's Classic Bars, Scandalous Sites, Historic Architecture, Dynamic Neighborhoods, and Famous Lakeshore

a fine addition to any bookshelf5
I've lived in Chicago for 20 years, and I learned heaps of new things from Ryan Ver Berkmoes' guide. Who knew the area around Jazz Record Mart once housed Chicago's first white settler, John Kinzie, who murdered a man on the spot? Who knew there was a Lakeview store with a Nun Fantasy Department? And ain't it sweet to know where in Hyde Park the Obamas shared their first smooch? Not only does Ver Berkmoes know his sights, he knows his booze. Food and drink recommendations accompany the walks, so you'll be well-fortified along the way.

consistent w/other Planet Earth, mostly favorable4
if you like the Planet Earth approach to written guides, then you should find this very helpful. For me, the goal was getting much more info on 2 towns, Moshi & Arusha. This was definitely helpful, albeit still coming up a bit short on these cities' information & details. But overall info is, as always, quite sufficient.

The book is full of errors2
This is one of the worst editions of Lonely Planet books I've ever read.

The book is full of factual errors which probably is a result of poor research. I doubt that the researcher actually have been at some of the places, and that he has copied information from the Internet instead.

I traveled this summer in Tanzania, and ran into errors in this guidebook time and again. The Rough Guide was far more accurate, even though that book is two years older.

I can accept that phone numbers are wrong, given the constantly expansion and changes in the Tanzanian mobile phone system, but addresses should be right most of the time.

Further more, I can accept that travel times can't be relied upon as accurate in Africa, but if the journalist had actually travelled the distanses himself, he would have noticed things like:

Travel times for bus companies are given to the region, not necessarily the city it self. That can mean a lot of difference given that the regions are huge.

The slow ferry to Zanzibar does not take 3 hours as stated in the guide - however if you ask at the ticket office they will tell you that. The slow ferrys are all old freight boats with an extra deck, and they take between 6 till 8 hours on the entire journey.

Several restaurants in this edition do not exist, or haven't opened yet. Given the lack of information on the food and service I doubt that the journalist actually bothered to sit down to eat at the places mentioned in the book.

Shopping districts mentioned in the Dar es Salaam chapter does not contain the type of shops mentioned. For instance, there are virtually no curio or souvenir shops along the Samora avenue, even though the book claims there's a whole lot of them.

The research behind this book is just so bad that it can't be relied upon. Get the Rough Guide instead - it's much better!

    bradt guide is better4
After having read both the Bradt and the Lonely Planet (LP) guide I can say that the Bradt guide, which is also available on amazon, is much better. Not that the LP guide is bad; in fact it provides a lot of information, which is why I give it 4 stars whereas I rated the Bradt guide 5 stars. The Bradt guide provides much more details about lodges/hotels it recommends and the presentation of information and maps are just much better

    GOING ULTRALIGHT

    BASIC TRIP PLANNING

Planning a trip requires more than simply deciding where to go and when. Whether it’s a weekend trip with friends, a formal outdoor program, or a major expedition, you need to evaluate your trip across a number of categories and develop a solid plan. One or two people may take on the role of planner, or the process of planning can be spread out among the entire group. I’ve planned and run trips for thousands of people both around the United States and around the world. Here are the elements you should keep in mind when planning any trip.

    GROUP SIZE AND ABILITY

Whenever you’re planning a trip, you need to determine if the route should fit the group or the group fit the route. The group may have a range of experience levels, physical conditions, and goals, in which case, your goal should be to plan a trip that is appropriate for everyone. Other times, you may have a specific trip you want to do that may be challenging or require special skills. For this kind of trip, you need to select a group that has the right qualifications to participate. Here’s a checklist of questions to ask when planning a group trip:

•What kind of group is it? Is it an informal group of friends or a formal group like an outdoor education program? Are the participants friends, students, volunteers, or paying customers? Formal groups may have specific policies and protocols that must be followed.

•What are the goals of each group member? Are people required to attend? (This factor can have a significant impact on how committed or not the group is to the wilderness experience.) Does the group have collective goals?

•What is the experience level of each member? What is the average experience level?

•Are there people in the group with the necessary skills to lead and manage the group or do you need to find other people to provide leadership? (See Appendix, “Outdoor Leadership.”)

    •How big is the group?

•What is the age range of group members?

•What is the physical condition of each member? What is the average physical condition of the group?

•Do people have particular health issues that could impact their participation?

Determine the level of experience, physical ability, etc., as much as possible before you set out. This will enable you to plan a smoother and more successful trip. More important, it will diminish the potential for dangerous situations. (See Chapter 8, “Safety and Emergency Procedures.”) Keep the group’s parameters in mind as you evaluate the other categories, thinking in terms of both optimal challenge and safety. Be aware that you will often have a great range of experience levels and physical abilities, so plan the trip at a level that will be fun, educational, challenging, and safe for everyone. Think about the high end and the low end of the experience level and physical condition, and err in the direction of the low end. Gathering physical fitness and basic health information will help you determine different abilities and experience levels (for a sample form, see page nnn).

    Group Dynamics

•How are costs going to be handled—equipment, food, transportation, permits, etc.? If you have to buy gear, who keeps it? It’s really important to work these things out before the trip, otherwise serious tensions can arise later.

•How will leadership be handled during the trip? (See Chapter 8, “Safety and Emergency Procedures,” and Chapter 10, “Outdoor Leadership”).

    ACTIVITIES

When planning the activities for a particular trip, you need to consider the following:

•What activity(ies) do you want to do on your trip (backpacking, peak climbing, and/or glacier travel, for example)?

•What are the goals for the trip?

•What skills will people need? Do they already have the skills or do they need to learn them?

•How do you integrate time for teaching skills with time for traveling?

Once you’ve evaluated the group members’ abilities, you can adapt your goals to an appropriate level. Plan activities that will be both appropriately challenging and safe. Be aware of how mileage, elevation change, and time for teaching and learning skills will affect your route (see “Estimating Travel Times,” page 12). Start easily and increase the level of difficulty gradually so that participants can be progressively challenged at appropriate levels, rather than placing them in a situation that is beyond their abilities.

    LOCATION AND WEATHER

    Research Your Destination

•Investigate the availability of guidebooks and maps.

•Contact area rangers or land managers to get more information. Inquire about permits required, safety issues like hunting season, and seasonal hazards like wildfires.

•Talk with other people who have been to the area before. If possible, check their trip logs, which may have important information not found in guidebooks.

    Trip Planning Questions

•How long is the trip? Can the trip be self-supporting in terms of equipment and food, or will you need to resupply? How will you do the resupply—cache items ahead of time, hike out, or have someone hike in? (See “Resupply Issues,” page 15.)

•How remote is the trip from “civilization” and help in case of an emergency?

    •What are the trail conditions?

•Are there special places you want to see?

•Are there places you want to avoid like high-use areas?

•Are shelters available on a daily basis, or do you need to bring your own?

•Where is parking and trailhead access?

•What is the water availability and water quality on a daily basis?

•Are there safety issues—hunting season, off-road vehicles, etc.?

•Are there any special natural hazards—flash floods in desert canyons, wildfires, etc.? (See “How Accidents Happen,” page 225.)

•What Leave No Trace practices will you need to implement to safeguard the environment? (See Chapter 5, “Leave No Trace Hiking and Camping.”)

    Regulations and Permits

Each location can have its own unique set of regulations and requirements. It is important to check these out in detail before you go.

Here are some of the possible issues to research:

•Are permits needed, and how do you obtain them?

•How far in advance do you need to apply for a permit?

•Is there a cost for the permit?

•Are their any special regulations about rescue? (Some parks, like Denali in Alaska, require that you pay for your own rescue.)

•Are there limitations to group size?

•Where is camping allowed and not allowed?

•Are there any restricted areas, hazardous zones, protected areas for endangered species, and such?

•Are fires allowed? If fires are allowed, will wood be available? Or will you need to bring a stove?

•Are there special regulations about Leave No Trace practices such as disposing of human waste?

    Weather

•How many hours of daylight will there be? Check the Web at sites like the Weather Channel (www.weather.com) for sunrise and sunset times and average high and low temperatures.

•How will the season determine the weather? Are storms or particular weather patterns likely? (See Chapter 7, “Weather and Nature.”)

•How will weather affect trip activities? How might it affect the safety of the group?

•Will altitude changes during the trip have an impact on weather or temperature?

    EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED

When planning a trip, remember that the ultimate goal is for people to have fun. Here are some tips to planning a trip that everyone can enjoy:

•Make a plan that can be modified during the trip. All sorts of factors—bad weather, changing trail conditions, broken equipment, ill-prepared participants, an injury—may require you to change your itinerary.

•Don’t plan long or difficult hikes on every day of the trip. Vary the mileage so that you have some days when you can get a later start or get to camp early.

•On longer trips, schedule a rest day every five to seven days.

•Make sure that people have some time during each day to kick back—to read, watch the sunset, or write in their journals.

•When hiking at high altitudes, people acclimatize at different rates. You may have to adjust your trip to give people time to properly acclimatize before going higher, especially if people are coming straight from sea level to a high altitude. (See “Altitude Illnesses,” page nnn.)

    EQUIPMENT

Once you have determined your trip activities and location, you need to put together an equipment list. Sample equipment lists are are provided in Appendix A, but remember that they should be used only as guidelines. Each trip and each person may have special requirements.

    great reference5
Read this book cover to cover before I took my first backpacking trip. Four year later, I still reference it. A book to keep forever.

Must Have Book For Any Backpacker, Hiker or Camper5

Backpacking, Camping and Hiking are wonderful activities that require a great deal of knowledge in order to safely and comfortably enjoy your surroundings.

To the beginner, tasks such as gear selection and trip planning can be a scary and confusing experience but armed with the suggestions in this book these decisions are actually quite easy.

This book covers many important aspects of outdoor travel including Basic Trip Planning, Gear Selection, First Aid, Safety, Travelling with Children, Wildlife and so much more.

This book can be compared to similar "Wilderness Survival" manuals including the Army's FM 21-76. The main difference is that this guide is much more gear focused and shows you how to get the most out of your gear while enabling you to enjoy mother nature.

I give this book 5 out of 5 and certainly recommend it.

    A must for newbies.4
I am a completly new backpacker. I am planning my first trip to the Smoky Mountains and read this book to help my out with EVERYTHING because i had no clue about what to get. This book has very useful information and i guess could be good to seasoned backpackers, I'll let you know in a few years a guess. Anyways you can bet on me carrying this book with me when i go to the smoky mountains next month!

    From Library Journal
Koenig, a freelance writer and editor, became friendly with many part-time employees of Disneyland in Anaheim. When they joined a major strike in 1984, Koenig was inspired to write this book. Drawing on interviews and extensive research, Koenig describes in detail Walt Disney's plan and the goals for his amusement park; the behind-the-scenes mechanisms of the attractions; the selection, training, and expectations of the employees; the persona of the Disney characters; profiles of guests (both welcome and unwelcome); the tragic accidents that have occurred and the lawsuits that ensued; and the spinoffs throughout the world. Though the lurid details of park mishaps and employee dissatisfaction are of interest to some, there's more here than most visitors would want to know. Even the author comes across as an admirer rather than as someone blowing the cover on the magic of Disney. Most libraries will want to stick with Birnbaum's Disneyland (Hyperion, 1992).
Elizabeth Loftus, Onondaga Cty. P.L., Syracuse, N.Y.
Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

    From Booklist
Koenig's tale may surprise some, since many of its specifics are so at odds with the Magic Kingdom's ultrahygienic image. If you've heard about Euro-Disney's problems (management control of staff lingerie, etc.), you expect to hear the travails of Disneyland employees, and Koenig does not disappoint, offering detailed explorations of visitor complaint procedures in which employees are presumed guilty and given no opportunity to defend themselves; the rigors of wearing hot, heavy, bulky character costumes; etc. But surprise comes when you learn of the invasion of at least parts of the Happiest Place on Earth by vermin: when the staff of one concession stayed late to complete a special project, they were horrified to see rats literally come out of the woodwork when the main park lights went off. What's more, Disneyland battles invading insects in many areas by many means. For all that, Disneyland's management comes off well, only occasionally looking insensitive. A valuable addition to popular culture literature and to Disneyana. Mike Tribby

Fun book, and interesting too! 4
As a self confessed Disnerd, I really enjoyed the stories in this book! It was fun to hear about the antics of the cast members! The book itself was an easy read, and the author created an unbiased account of what it was like to work for Disney. If you like Disneyland, and want to find out a bit more about the strange goings on ( and some tragic ones too!) read this book.

    Entertaining Book!5
I read this book in one sitting...I was rivoted to the multiple and very fascinating stories. I absolutely loved it!

    Wild.5
For some reason, it seems like the book shouldn't exist... like Disney would have put a stop to it, somehow. David Koenig would be handing over the only copy of his manuscript to the publisher, and then seven dwarves crash through the windows and shred the book and burn the building down. Maybe "little people" is the correct term. It's hard to say.

Because he somehow managed to get around the Disney spin machine, I give it 5 stars.

    About the Author
STREETWISE® is the first map to be designed with modern graphics and is the originator of the laminated, accordion-fold map format. We’ve set the standard that every map company has imitated but never duplicated. Our mission is to make you feel comfortable, to make you feel safe in a place where you’ve never been before and to enable you to experience a familiar place more fully.

The company was founded in 1984 by Michael Brown, who had been in international publishing for many years, setting up subsidiaries for textbook publishers. In the 1970’s, Brown traveled extensively throughout Africa, India, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Brown would take a large paper map, cut out the city center, folded it up and slip it into his pocket, thus preventing him from looking like a tourist in areas where discretion is the better part of travel. This was his tool for surviving.

After many years on the road, Brown settled back in New York and decided to start his own business, based on the adaptations he had made to maps in his travels. His goal was to give someone the ability to navigate easily in unfamiliar terrain.

He started with a new map format: the accordion fold. Such a simple idea, but at the time it was revolutionary. No more struggling to fold an awkward, oversized paper map. This new format would enable the user to blend in like a native, instead of stick out like a tourist. Brown then added lamination to ensure that the map would be a lasting tool.

More important than the format was the design of the map itself. It had to be a map that not only succeeded above and beyond any map he had used, but was esthetically appealing as well. The look of it had to be as striking as the functionality. Color was introduced in a way that was never seen before in a map - vivid purple for water, soothing gray for the background of street grids, gold to highlight elements of the map. Clarity, conciseness and convenience in a very stylish package.

Building the business was a 24 hour job. Brown sold the maps during the day, zipping around Manhattan making deliveries on his Harley Davidson. At night he packed the orders and did the design work. More titles were added, each title requiring months of research and design.

Today, STREETWISE® produces over 130 titles for major destinations, regions and countries throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Europe, the United Kingdom and Asia. We have grown from the back of a motorcycle to selling millions of maps around the world.

Yet each title is still painstakingly researched and updated. STREETWISE® is one of the only, if not THE only map company that conducts research by walking or driving an area to ensure accuracy. After all, what good is the map if what you hold in your hands doesn’t match what you see on the street sign? This lengthy fact checking results in superior accuracy; in effect, we’ve done the work, now you have the adventure.

In the end, it’s not about the map, it’s about getting out and finding your own authentic experience wherever you go. It’s about being in a city or a region and discovering things that you never thought you would find. You can do this if you have confidence and you have confidence if you have a great map. STREETWISE® is the great map that you need.

    Handy4
We used this map on our recent week long trip to the city. We like to walk and it was super helpful to help in our 5 hour walks around the city. The only bummer was that I wish it showed more of Daly City at the southern edge a bit south of San Francisco State University.

    Very Durable5
I took this map on a backpacking trip in CA, it held up throughout being repeatedly stuffed into an overfilled pack and pulled out multiple times daily when we were in the city. One of the most helpful aspects is the inclusion of the BART and MUNI lines. I don't know how we would have survived without it! This map was our lifeline when we were navigating through San Francisco.

    Useful5
This was very useful. It folds up to a regular purse size and the laminated aspect made it less likely to rip or get wet. The map itself was very clear and easy to read, and I loved the addition of the downtown tram routes.

An ok Travel guide but really much more5
Trying to review this book is somewhat hard, technically it's a travel guide and as that its ok, but its really more than that. Its one of the best birds eye views of the major attractions in China. Kind of a Whats-What of China. Having been to China on several trips I can personally attest to the quality of the selection and information.

They Layout is organized by region, usually two provinces to a Chapter. You get a brief overview of the province, then it moves to 1-2 pages per location (maybe a city or a park) in that province. The information is a smorgasborg of text, photos and illustrations. It covers the major attractions and why they are significant. The photographs are stunning (if small by necessity). The information is both informative and concise. Its amazing how much stuff they've packed in there.

Sprinkled throughout the chapters are various shorts (1-2 pages) on Chinese history and culture. Again high level concise information but enough to get you started.

The construction of the book is way above your newsprint guides. Its got good binding, vinyl covers and slick glossy pages. Top notch.

The only thing I would knock it for is that as a travel guide its travel nuts and bolts (specific places to stay, eat, shop, train schedules, directions etc) is pretty weak. They have some information but it tends to be focused more on the high end stuff rather than the budget backpacker.

This book is best bought, used and enjoyed as a overall reference book on China for people who just want to know more. As a travel guide it is a good source of information to get you started, but its not where you'll finish. You'll want to look at other information and resources when it comes to the specifics of your journey.

    So to Recap

    Pros
    Excellent Photos, text and diagrams
    Well organized
    Concise chocked full of info
    Good quality printing and binding
    Wide variety of information

    Cons
    Weak on travel specific information

    Conclusion
A great book for someone thinking of a trip to china and wondering "what is there to see" as well as reference to China and its many highlights.

    Beautiful and Somewhat Practical4
My husband and I travelled independently around China for 3 weeks with this book and the Lonely Planet. We found that the beautiful photography helped inspire our choice of destinations, and the maps and illustrations helped us navigate once we were there. We especially liked the axonometric drawings with labels.

Although this book includes some practical information about the sites, the Lonely Planet was much more detailed in terms of how to actually get somewhere. I think it would be difficult to travel with only this book for guidance.

A few hotels and restaurants are recommended in the back of the book. This information would have been much more useful if the names were also written in Chinese. We often found ourselves in situations where we could not communicate with taxi drivers or hotel concierges, so we relied on pointing to places (with Chinese names) in guidebooks. Having the pinyin names didn't do us much good since our pronunciation and accents were not understandable.

    Wonderful Photos, Loads of Detail5
This was my first Eyewitness Travel Guide, and I must say that it's really quite good. Photos, photos, and more photos, and lots of great feature pages (language and script, landscape and wildlife - by region, and so on). Also, superb diagrams permeate the pages, like the one of Shanghai's Bund. You no longer have to match number 23 to the 23 in a list of microscopic place names on another page, nor will you realize later that what you thought was (for example) the Palace Hotel was really, say, the Chartered Bank of India. Also, this type of book is outstanding in that it will show you something you are unfamiliar with and explain it to you. Ever wondered what all the different components of a temple are called or what their purpose is? Go to the archictecture section and look it up.

I only have a couple of wee complaints. The map in the front would be much better if it were fold out and/or divided into provinces. Also, another map should be included to show rail lines and major roads without obscuring the provinces, etc. The two maps provided are OK, but you'll probably need other ones. Such a high quality book deserves better maps. Also, it's really very heavy, but I suppose that can't be helped. You'd have to be pretty adventurous to only use this guide book, but it would make an excellent supplement to a "traditional" one. Ideal for a couple. One can figure out where to stay, where the bus station is, etc., and the other can carry this volume and - in spite of the weight - be enlightened.

    A Voyage for Madmen

    A Voyage for Madmen

    A Voyage for Madmen

In 1968, nine sailors set off on the most daring race ever held: to single-handedly circumnavigate the globe nonstop. It was a feat that had never been accomplished and one that would forever change the face of sailing. Ten months later, only one of the nine men would cross the finish line and earn fame, wealth, and glory. For the others, the reward was madness, failure, and death.

In this extraordinary book, Peter Nichols chronicles a contest of the individual against the sea, waged at a time before cell phones, satellite dishes, and electronic positioning systems. A Voyage for Madmen is a tale of sailors driven by their own dreams and demons, of horrific storms in the Southern Ocean, and of those riveting moments when a split-second decision means the difference between life and death.

    From Publishers Weekly
In the psychedelic summer of 1968, as Apollo 8 soared toward the moon and the Democratic Convention crashed in Chicago, nine men tried finally to accomplish the sailor's age-old ultimate goal: a solo, nonstop circumnavigation of the world. Nichols (Sea Change) deftly introduces myriad aspects of a voyage that promised "dubious, unquantifiable" rewards. He insightfully contextualizes the endeavor as an offshoot of Sir Francis Chichester's famous 1967 solo circumnavigation (with one stop), which represented to England a "longed-for" heroism. Detailing the British media's successful exploitation of the so-called race, he approaches the voyage as the remarkable result of nine men wishing to outdo Chichester. Nichols painstakingly describes the enormous difficulty of solo navigation in the pre-global positioning system of the 1960s. These "hardcase egomaniacs driven by complex desires and vainglory to attempt an extreme, life-threatening endeavor" used only rudimentary equipment and their wits. Nichols is at his liveliest when describing the only two participants who "were really happy aboard their boats": the French-Asian Bernard Moitessier, the most skilled sailor, whose mystical seamanship brings surprises, and the British Robin Knox-Johnson, who was energized during his journey by the memory of "the Elizabethan sea heroes of his youth." Nichols also delivers a compelling portrait of English Donald Crowhurst, an electronics engineer whose "supercharged personality" wreaked havoc on the entire race. While Nichols's pace is neither breakneck nor suspenseful, his careful details and psychological insight make for a riveting account of the triumphant human spirit. 16-page photo insert, 8 maps.

    From Booklist
In 1968 there remained one major nautical challenge yet to be accomplished: sailing single-handedly nonstop around the world. Nine men set out to achieve it in one of the most widely publicized yacht races. What could possess nine otherwise sane and responsible men to risk their lives, careers, and the well-being of their families by undertaking such a reckless endeavor? Nichols introduces the reader to the contestants, giving a vivid portrayal of the men attempting the feat. He expertly tells their individual stories in great detail: why they entered the race, what they had staked on winning, and their struggles at sea. He weaves their story together to form a comprehensive account of the race that reads like a suspense novel. Readers will eagerly turn the pages to discover how some were defeated by the ocean or the race's harsh rules and the lengths to which one contestant went to be declared the winner. An interesting slice of history that makes for a worthy seagoing adventure story. Gavin Quinn

The finest map you can buy.5
I've been camping in Maine for a few weeks... Mainers expect you to have one of these. They say "get out your DeLorme's" not "do you have a map?" Some people I've met have pointed me to the right page without looking at the back.

The details in this atlas are great! All of Maine's public reserve land and campground are clearly marked. If you are trying to do some real camping in some remote areas, get this map. This is a must if you are going to be doing anything outdoors in ME. I never thought I'd say a map is fun to read.
