    From Publishers Weekly
Hathaway and Schatz were happy living together in New York City—Schatz was Time.com's picture editor, and Hathaway a former manager of Magnolia Bakery. Still, they wondered what sort of people they'd be if they lived in the country, and in this offbeat memoir Hathaway narrates their search. The idea of raising cows wasn't affordable or appealing, but goats were intriguing, especially since their cheeses were so tasty. Before long, the couple decided to leave New York for a yearlong goat odyssey, searching out everything goat that struck their fancy. Starting in New York with a tasting session with maître fromager Max McCalman, they traveled the country visiting goat farms, auctions and shows. While they had a lot to learn—how to milk goats, how to trim their hooves—they were also trying to find a model lifestyle for themselves. Eventually, they realized they wanted a farm with some vegetables and some animals, but not so many that the farm would become a factory. More than anything, they wanted a modest life surrounded by people they loved. Back-to-the-land fantasies aren't new, but Hathaway gives theirs a modern twist by emphasizing terroir, the idea that food is rooted in the land, and of connecting the palate to the place. Local-eating, slow-food activists will find much to chew on here. (Aug.)

    From Booklist
Burned out by the rigors of New York City, Hathaway and her boyfriend imagined an agricultural life. Self-described foodies (Hathaway managed Manhattan's famed Magnolia bakery), the couple thought about making goat cheese, and after agonizing about how best to realize their dream, they decided to spend a year researching and visiting goat operations throughout the country. In the Year of the Goat, according to the Chinese zodiac, they quit their jobs and set off, camping along the way. Their travels introduce them to goat conventions and festivals (goat chariot races are the headlining attraction at one), world-renowned chefs and cheese experts, and cheese makers at dairies large and small. Hathaway pokes fun at her naive notions of rural life with a sly humor that nicely balances the naked earnestness of the endeavor. The details of animal husbandry and cheese production will intrigue those interested in food's origins, and many readers, particularly city dwellers, will also be captured by the personal story of a young couple's unusually thoughtful efforts to build a meaningful life together. Engberg, Gillian

    From the Back Cover
Many people dream of leaving the workday world for a life of simplicity and freedom, and Margaret Hathaway and Karl Schatz did just that. Feeling like something was missing from their city lives, the couple began to dream of an existence that was closer to the land and became captivated by the idea of themselves as . . . goat farmers. Realizing that they knew little about goats, and even less about farming, they gave themselves a year to explore the world of goats and decide if that was where they belonged. In The Year of  the Goat, the reader can jump in the “goatmobile” and follow their adventures as they ditch their big-city lifestyle to trek across forty-three states in search of greener pastures and the perfect goat cheese. Along the way, the reader is introduced to a vivid cast of characters—including farmers, breeders, cheese makers, and world-class chefs—and learns everything there is to know about goats and getting back to the land. From the largest goat auction in Texas to a small Indiana dairy, from a Tennessee barbecue cook-off to a tasting session with New York’s premier maître fromager, the couple pursues all things goat. But readers beware: when it comes to goat cheese, it can be love at first bite.

    A delightful story.5
I read this book to learn more about goat cheeses (which I have recently grown to love) and not only learned more about them, but about the passion that goes into their production. This book is about people with true love for what they have decided to do. It is a pleasure to read and I can't wait to get to the market and sort through the goat cheeses again, now with a little more knowledge of not just how they taste and how are produced, but the beauty of the animals and people responsible for them. Who knew a book about cheese could lead you to both laugh and cry!

    Random, but great!4
This book was recommended to me from a public library reading list. Although I was initially hesitant to read this book (I have little interest in the production of goat cheese or goat meat), I was really glad that I did.

In this book, Margaret Hathaway and Karl Schatz (her photographer partner) leave New York City to travel around the United States to determine if they are interested in beginning a new lifestyle as agriculturalists. They interview any and all individuals associated with the industry of goats (cheese makers, chefs, butchers, show judges, etc.) and discover an amazing amount about the U.S. goat world and about themselves.

The first few pages of the book are a little information-heavy, but the characters they meet on their journey make up for the intense emphasis on goat products. In reading this book, I feel like I got out of it what I hoped I would: a realistic and purposeful travelogue about American community.

I read this as part of a book club (I suggested this book on faith), and we had some really interesting conversations about their journey, sustainable living, and small-town charm. Some of us loved it and others of us didn't like it as well.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in goats, back-to-the-land movements, and insightful traveling memoirs.*

*For others interested in obscure (but interesting) travel narratives, I would highly recommend "Who Are You People: A Personal Journey into the Heart of Fanatical Passion in America" by Shari Caudron. This author dives into various communities (Barbie Doll conventions, Furries, Sci-Fi conventions, etc.) to understand what draws people to different interests and how these communities are interlinked.

I kept *trying* to like it ! 2
This book was a big let down. I was so excited when I came upon it. The premise sounds great! My DH and I are also moving into such a new life of goats. . .But trying to get through these pages was tiresome work! It is written like. . . a flat book report is what comes to mind. I was rooting for this book; every chapter I had hope. Big disappointment IMO.

Beyond the Sky and the Earth: A Journey into Bhutan

Beyond the Sky and the Earth: A Journey into Bhutan

Beyond the Sky and the Earth: A Journey into Bhutan

Jamie Zeppa made a life-altering decision at the age of 24 when she left an academic career to join a two-year teaching programme for young Canadians in Bhutan. Bhutan is a notoriously difficult country to visit as a tourist, and the opportunity to live there was one Jamie could not ignore - despite apprehension about leaving her boyfriend and family behind. The first months were nightmarish and Jamie existed on a meagre diet of crackers and boiled water for fear of catching tape worm or worse. The unpronouncable language, bizarre local customs and basic living conditions all conspired to make her miserably home-sick but the young chidren she was supposedly teaching eventually took her in hand and taught her to cook on an antiquated gas stove: their grateful families gave her fresh fruit and vegetables and Jamie finally discovered that she was surrounded by friends in a beautiful location. Jamie Zeppa has written a book about the difficulties of living within an alien culture, far away from the security of "home". She tells, with humour, of the everyday prejudices she was forced to overcome as a white woman abroad and writes with genuine awe about the beauty of Bhutan. Her assessme

    Amazon.com Review
As a teacher of English literature, Jamie Zeppa would understand how the story of her journey into Bhutan could be fit into the convenient box of "coming-of-age romance," a romance with a landscape, a people, a religion, and a dark, irresistible student. An innocent, young Catholic woman from a Canadian mining town who had "never been anywhere," Zeppa signed up for a two-year stint teaching in a remote corner of the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan. Despite the initial shock of material privation and such minor inconveniences as giardia, boils, and leeches, Zeppa felt herself growing into the vast spaces of simplicity that opened up beyond the clutter of modern life. Alongside her burgeoning enchantment, a parallel realization that all was not right in Shangri-La arose, especially after her transfer to a college campus charged with the politics of ethnic division. Still she maintained her center by devouring the library's Buddhist tracts and persevering in an increasingly fruitful meditation practice. When the time came for her to leave, she had undergone a personal transformation and found herself caught between two worlds that were incompatible and mutually incomprehensible. Zeppa's candid, witty account is a spiritual memoir, a travel diary, and, more than anything, a romance that retraces the vicissitudes of ineluctable passion. --Brian Bruya

    From Publishers Weekly
Zeppa's story is nearly an inversion of the ancient Buddhist tale of Siddhartha (in which a prince ventures from the paradise of his father's palace only to find the suffering and decay that he never knew existed) in that the author, at the age of 22, abruptly leaves a stale life in Canada to become a volunteer teacher in the remote and largely undisturbed Buddhist kingdom of Bhutan. Cloaked in the airy mountains between India and China, Bhutan initially frustrates but eventually captivates Zeppa with its rudimentary lifestyle that forces her to question former values and plans for the future. Though the story line would seem to open itself to cloying romanticization, Zeppa's telling of her clumsy attempts to adapt rings with sincerity and inspires sympathy. She thinks to herself upon visiting a local house: "In one shadowy corner, there is a skinny chicken. I blink several times but it does not vanish. Is it a pet? Is it dinner?" Zeppa's lucid descriptions of the craggy terrain and honest respect for the daily struggles of the natives bring the tiny land to life in a way that is reverent but real. Though she tries to avoid what a friend terms "that Shangri-La-Di-Da business" and grapples with the poverty, sexism and political squabbles in Bhutan that bother her, there is little doubt that she sees the place in a largely positive light and is tempted to remain. In the end, Zeppa's is a lively tale of her earnest efforts to reconcile what she has learned with what she has known. (June)

    From Library Journal
Canadian Zeppa turned away from a secure future "to do something in the real world." When the opportunity came to teach in the remote Buddhist kingdom of Bhutan, Zeppa accepted with alacrity over the protests of her xenophobic grandfather and the lukewarm approval of her fianc?. At 22, Zeppa was unprepared for the rigors of life in the Third World. Upon arrival at her assigned junior high school in the tiny tropical village of Pema Gatshel, she was dismayed by the primitive living quarters and her own inadequacies as a teacher. But her overwhelming culture shock was eased by the charm of the Bhutanese and the beauty of the landscape. Leaving her first assignment with reluctance, Zeppa was transferred to a position at a college in the mountain town of Kanglung, became a Buddhist, and plunged into a relationship with one of her students. Her story reads like a good novel; even her youthful na?vet? has charm. Zeppa's deep affection for her adopted home makes this a special book. Highly recommended.AJanet N. Ross, Washoe Cty. Lib. A must read journey about beauty in a remote area in the world!5
I chose this book, as I had no knowledge of this country.
My interest of international studies evolves around Tibet, India and Nepal. Until Jamie Zeppa wrote about her journey into Bhutan, I felt a piece of that region was excluded from my area of interest.

I was expecting this book to be a sociological one, but the author's journey and the writing of it far exceeded that conclusion...to my personal benefit!

The author crossed this remote, mountainous region and gave us a glimps of it's beautiful land and it's beautiful people.
Clearly, Tibet, India and Nepal have had their influence on this country, even though Bhutan is tucked away within it's mountainous terrain. But many settlers of these countries remain there, as their languages, foods, and cultures seem to be all incorporated, in their regions.

What was so overwhelmingly interesting about this story is that I could identify with the author. She basically picked a remote region of the world to move to, and offered her skills as an English teacher.

As the author's first journey into Bhutan came to be an unsure one(due to getting to her destination), it was
visibly clear that passage of transportation would be impossible at times, by barriers created from the monsoons and the winter months. Yet for the people of Bhutan, there is an acceptance in living with inconveience. I think that their acceptability has everything has to do with their religion...Tibetan Buddhism.

Thus, a journey in and out of the country takes time and effort; but, time is not of the essence to these people. They don't need to hurry and scurry in their lifestyles. They are quite satisfied and proud with what they have.
Buddhists are carefree and mindful people. They are taught to never intentionally harm other sentiment beings...an important key to their religion. More of this religion is explained in the book.

It was great reading about a person in our Western Hemisphere, going into this remote country, and finding so much beauty. In fact, she returns to Bhutan more times than I could physically imagine.

The simplicity and the repertoire of this remote country entices me to visit this land of splendor some day in my life. But I can not physically do so; therefore, I am hoping that maybe others of you who read this book will want to travel there and update Bhutan to us by publishing your own journey, as well.

This book is a story of survival and inconveience in the beginning, but that is well overcome before long, because the importance of life there can change a person, as author Jamie Zeppa illustrates it does on her journey.

So, thank you, Jamie Zeppa! You brought me into a beautiful region that is rarely written about, particularly on a personal level! The people, the land and the religion are so worth your study.
Please know this is one of the most interesting books that I have ever read!

    Fabulous travel philosophy 5
This book should be a must-read for anyone planning to work outside their own culture. Its treatment of culture shock and adjustment is so very well done.

The author is a very good writer and has a fabulous story to tell, full of interesting characters, amazing places, politically based tension and conflicting emotions as she balances her two worlds and tries to find her place between them. This is a thoroughly enjoyable book, worth a place in any library.

Memoir of a Canadian teacher's experience in Bhutan4
Memoir of a Canadian Teacher in Bhutan

Jamie Zeppa, an English teacher from Canada, in 1999 wrote of her life experience in Bhutan from 1989 to 1992. With the World University Service of Canada (WUSC) financed overseas education program in Bhutan, the slightly over 20 year old teacher changed her whole life to take a chance at living in a completely different part of the world. Practically without knowledge of the culture she was going to impact and loads of useless baggage she transferred to this tiny Himalayan kingdom convinced of reaching the Shangrila. The cultural shock of the small village posting, the solitude, the breathtaking but initially frightening environment, the incapacity of connecting to such a different population almost drove her crazy at the beginning. But due to her strong ego and a particularly ironic and self-mocking attitude she slowly learns to cope and understands the life philosophy of these simple but practical people. "Anyone can live anywhere" she wisely concludes. The beauty of the landscape and the joy de vivre of her students conquers her heart and starts a transformation that not only converts her to Buddhism but leads her to accept a new challenge in a superior school in a bigger city.
The college students and colleagues contribute to her re-evaluation of her Western cultural heritage and the deeper comprehension of the Eastern way of life and open her vision of the true nature of Bhutanese culture and difficult political situation. With magisterial delicate tones Zeppa describes the political and ethnological undertones of the Bhutanese youth and the gender discrimination of women.
Unexpectedly she also falls in love with one of her students and bravely decides to make a life commitment to her new found values.

This diary/novel is well written, funny, full of quaint and memorable episodes and a pleasure to read. It conveys all the puzzlement of cultural shocks in the pre-globalization era and shows how the concept of "sustainable economy" was already evident at the beginning of the 1990's. The book contains a plethora of useful information to understand modern Bhutan.
The "spirit of place" is conveyed with grace, the personal experiences gain an universal value and it is possible to identify with the Author.

If you like these types of memoirs I suggest reading Louisa Waugh's "Hearing Birds Fly", a similar experience of a British teacher in Mongolia.

    Perfect Gift4
I was a little thrown off because the cover is a little cheesy, but the book is gorgeous! The pictures inside are stunning, and it has a ton of great information.

    Lovely photos5
I wish there were more places here and more "things to do" sections once you get to those places, but it's a good book to thumb through and make plans, for sure.

    Works As A Travel "Tease"4
Steve Davey appears to have further developed a relatively new niche in the travel book field with the publication of Unforgettable Places to See Before You Die. There isn't enough factual information presented to consider this book a travel guide. Likewise, there aren't enough opinions presented to consider it a travelogue. Finally, there aren't enough pictures to consider it a pictorial. However, because elements of all three characteristics are present, it seems appropriate to consider this book a travel "tease."

Fortunately, Unforgettable Places to See Before You Die works as a "tease". Despite some slightly clunky advice (almost every site is described as being best to visit first thing in the morning) and the occasional average picture, there are just enough useful facts and vivid pictures presented to whet the interest of anyone that has remotely considered traveling to the locations described in the book. While certainly not the definitive source regarding information or pictures about these spots, Unforgettable Places to See Before You Die is worth purchasing if approached as a "tease" intended to inspire further interest and research.

A Primate's Memoir: A Neuroscientist's Unconventional Life Among the Baboons

A Primate's Memoir: A Neuroscientist's Unconventional Life Among the Baboons

"I had never planned to become a savanna baboon when I grew up; instead, I had always assumed I would become a mountain gorilla," writes Robert Sapolsky in this witty and riveting chronicle of a scientist's coming-of-age in remote Africa.

An exhilarating account of Sapolsky's twenty-one-year study of a troop of rambunctious baboons in Kenya, A Primate's Memoir interweaves serious scientific observations with wry commentary about the challenges and pleasures of living in the wilds of the Serengeti -- for man and beast alike. Over two decades, Sapolsky survives culinary atrocities, gunpoint encounters, and a surreal kidnapping, while witnessing the encroachment of the tourist mentality on the farthest vestiges of unspoiled Africa. As he conducts unprecedented physiological research on wild primates, he becomes evermore enamored of his subjects -- unique and compelling characters in their own right -- and he returns to them summer after summer, until tragedy finally prevents him.

By turns hilarious and poignant, A Primate's Memoir is a magnum opus from one of our foremost science writers.

    Amazon.com Review
Robert Sapolsky, the author of Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers and other popular books on animal and human behavior, decided early in life to become a primatologist, volunteering at the American Museum of Natural History and badgering his high school principal to let him study Swahili to prepare for travel in Africa. When he set out to conduct fieldwork as a young graduate student, though, Sapolsky found that life among a Kenyan baboon troop was markedly different from his earlier bookish studies. Among other things, he confesses, he had to become a master of shooting anesthetic darts into his subjects with a blowgun to take blood samples, a mastery that required him to become "a leering slinky silent quicksilver baboon terror." He also had to learn how to negotiate the complexities of baboon politics, endure the difficulties of life in the bush, and subsist on cases of canned mackerel and beans.

His memoir is, in the main, quite humorous, although Sapolsky flings a few darts along the way at the late activist Dian Fossey--who, he hints, may have indirectly caused the deaths of her beloved mountain gorillas by her unstable, irrational dealings with local people--and at local bureaucrats whose interests did not often coincide with those of Sapolsky's wild charges. It is also full of good information on primates and primatology, a subject whose practitioners, it seems, are constantly fighting to save species and ecosystems. "Every primatologist I know is losing that battle," he writes. "They make me think of someone whose unlikely job would be to collect snowflakes, to rush into a warm room and observe the unique pattern under a microscope before it melts and is never seen again." --Gregory McNamee

    From Publishers Weekly
Few would relish a job requiring proficiency with a blowgun as well as a willingness to put up with parching heat, low pay and copious amounts of baboon shit. But for Sapolsky (The Trouble with Testosterone), a Stanford professor and MacArthur grant recipient, it was literally a dream come true. As a boy in New York City, he'd wanted to live in one of the African dioramas at the Museum of Natural History. One week after graduating from Harvard in the mid-1970s, he got his chance: he went to Kenya to study social behavior in baboons. Hilariously unprepared for the challenges of living in the bush, the na ve grad student learned to deal with supply and transportation snafus, army ants and giant cockroaches, safari tourists, dinners of canned spaghetti coated with a mixture of sugar and rancid camel's milk, and surreal government bureaucracies. He developed great fondness for "his" baboons, whose behavior seemed uncannily like that of a bunch of quarrelsome human adolescents, and discovered that their interactions didn't necessarily conform to accepted theories. While Sapolsky's primate observations are always fascinating, his thoughts on Africa and Africans are even more compelling. As funny and irreverent as a good ol' boy regaling his friends with vacation-from-hell stories, Sapolsky can also be disarmingly emotional as in his clear-headed tribute to late gorilla researcher Dian Fossey, and his final chapters, which reveal his rage and impotence as he watched his baboons succumb to a horrific plague. Filled with cynicism and awe, passion and humor, this memoir is both an absorbing account of a young man's growing maturity and a tribute to the continent that, despite its troubles and extremes, held him in its thrall. Agent, Katinka Matson. (Mar. 1) Forecast: Heralded by Oliver Sacks and Edward O. Wilson, and with a well-placed excerpt of this book in Discover magazine, Sapolsky will venture out on a seven-city author tour that should help bring him to the attention of readers interested in animals, Africa, ecology and travel.

    From Library Journal
Sapolsky (The Trouble with Testosterone), a professor of biology and neurology at Stanford and a research associate with the Institute of Primate Research at the National Museum of Kenya, focuses on his field research with baboons and experiences in Africa in general. He includes all the typical elements of recent popular field biology books (e.g., Margaret Lowman's Life in the Treetops, LJ 5/15/99): how he got his funding, set up camp, and his experiences with the animals he studies, but his hilarious writing style and sense of the absurd are fairly unique in the genre. He alternates tales of the baboons and their interesting social lives with his off-site adventures, which include a surreal kidnapping and an emotional pilgrimage to see mountain gorillas and muse on Dian Fossey's legacy. The book ends poignantly when an epidemic strikes the baboon troop. Recommended for college and public libraries.

I needed this book immediately for school. It arrived in time and in good condition. Before ordering I compared prices and this was the best deal. All around everything turned out perfectly.

    An All Time Favorite5
This book is hard to classify: Is it autobiography? Primatolgy? Travel adventures? Humanist philosophy? Humor? Basically it is all of these and more. It is a real page turner. Sapolsky has a truly marvelous sense of humor that includes knowing how to laugh at himself. I rank it with in the top 10 favorite books I've ever read. Bravo!

Great guide for planning cross country trip5
I'm planning to take my two teenagers cross country this summer and this is a GREAT book for finding interesting places to show them. It has excellent maps, clear directions, and well-written descriptions of what you will (and won't) see so I can figure out what sites will best entertain the different family members. I only wish we had time to see more of the places they describe. It even tells you what other nearby attractions there are. Kudos to the authors!

    Love Factory Tours5
My wife and I love to go on factory tours and visit company museums when we travel. It's corny, I know, but fun. This book gives wonderful examples of some of the best tours and museums around. Whenever we're going on a road trip, we always consult Watch It Made in the U.S.A.: A Visitor's Guide to the Best Factory Tours and Company Museums (Watch It Made in the USA) to help us decide where we might like to go. I would very much recommend it for families with young kids who might enjoy such tours, and probably retirees who have the time and interest for them, as well.

    Excellent for travelers5
This is an excellent book for anyone who is interested in things made in the USA. It gives a nice description of the facilities, locations, tour times, cost and lengths, age appropriateness, and phone numbers.
We like to travel the country and will use the information to plan our trips. The book is well organized and very helpful.

A saviour to me and my husband and our AMERICAN housemates!5
We have made many journeys based around the information that we have gained from this great book. It has helped us through many situations where we would have been lost without it- even with our two American housemates as tour guides they have found the book a great help to them also. Considering that it is a book that has tried to fit in an entire continent- and a large and full one at that it contains a lot of great and helpful information! And it is a relatively small book- I carry it either in my handbag or backpack when travelling. Like most lonely Planet guides it has not just information on the cool things to do and see how the stories behind them, but also a lot of information on sleeping, eating, stores etc., which I myself don't find terribly useful as I tend to plan that stuff ahead on line nor to I travel to shop, however for many who do not work that way it is a great help! I would recommend it not just to people travelling the USA but those who live here and might want to make trips, even learn some new things about the area they come from!

    very interesting!4
it is kind of dangerous to read this book cause it gives you a lots of ideas!!!!
and you want to see everything in the USA...

easy to find what you want in it, good maps, good advice...

Great book - sorry I wasn't able to use it4
I got the book a little to late. Not because of Amazon, but UPS did not deliver as promised. After having a quick look in the book I see alot of things I should have done during my weeks in the US, but now it's to late.

Next time I'll promise you, next time :)

    from a Northern California hiker5
Three books I use and reuse for hiking: this one (I'm happy it's been updated and use it for pointing me in the right direction reference more than detailed trail directions); the Golden Gate Trailblazer for all the gorgeous trails on the San Francisco coastline and those in beautiful Marin; the Stairway Walks in San Francisco book. Someday I hope to try some of the southern California outings. This book is very thick and comprehensive.
Stairway Walks in San FranciscoGolden Gate Trailblazer: Where to Hike, Walk, Bike in San Francisco & Marin

    Love this book!5
I actually used up my first copy of this book - I still have it but the pages are falling out and it is pretty dog-eared, so I bought the updated version. I love the rating systems (1-5 for difficulty, 1-10 for ooohs and aaahhhs), the area maps, the specific tips for each hike. My husband and I hike in the Sierras a lot during the summer and this book has taken us to some wonderful places. We even used the book to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary with a "hike" across the Golden Gate Bridge! Just about anywhere you go in California, this book can guide you to a very satisfying hike.

Truth in Advertising: A New Edition of California's Hiking Bible.5
Every two years or so, hikers in California are blessed with a new edition of Ann Marie Brown and Tom Stienstra's California Hiking, by far the most complete hiking guide to the state. Keeping track of all the trails and updating when necessary is no simple task. Indeed, one of the authors proudly advertises hiking, camping, and otherwise exploring the out of doors almost half the year in an effort to keep this book up to date and to "avoid .. getting a real job." The 2008 edition is the largest in several years and includes over 40 new hikes.

What has stayed the same. California Hiking still divides the state into sixteen geographical regions and lists hikes in each area. Maps of each region are provided with directions to the trail heads, and regions are organized from North (Redwood Empire) to South (San Diego County and Southern Deserts). An introduction explains how to use the guide and lists favorite hikes of the authors in multiple categories, from best wildflowers and waterfalls, to best "difficult" hikes (the authors use a slightly different aphorism) ie., hikes you might not want to take your spouse on. Each hike includes a brief description, along with directions to the trailhead. Individual trail maps cannot be included in a guide as comprehensive as this one, but the authors provide information on where to obtain available maps, along with important details like entrance fees, permits, and local government agencies.

What is new. More trails! From one end of the state to the other, the authors have added new hikes: some twenty in the San Franciso area alone. I am personally looking forward to walking the recently opened Mill Creek trail, found just south of Monterey and Carmel. Old growth redwoods are one of my passions, and any new trails of this sort are welcome. Among the new hikes in Southern California, Gray's Peak and Black Mountain Lookout both offer spectacular overlooks. Also new is Runyon Canyon in Hollywood Hills and several new trails in the Sacramento area. A few trails have been dropped from this edition. The Cedars Creek Interpretive trail, for example, has fallen into disrepair and is no longer listed in California Hiking. But for the most part, the changes are in favor of more, not less, and this edition is worth purchasing for the new hikes alone.

Other changes include updating mileages and difficulty ratings. Those of us who are absolutely exhausted after climbing to the top of Yosemite Falls will be relieved to find that this trail is now rated a "4" on the difficulty scale (which runs from 1 to 5). The authors have also made extensive mileage updates to reflect new trail alignments. Deep Creek Hot Springs is now listed as 4 miles from a new trail head, and the Ewoldson trail, probably the single most beautiful hike in the Monterey area, is now listed at 5.3 miles to include a spur trail to a stunning overlook.

Over the years I have met a number of hikers who use this book as their hiking bible for the state. More than a few of them (myself included) dream of walking every trail listed. That would require a Herculean effort, of course, but it says a lot that the authors of this book have done so multiple times and given the rest of us what is surely the most comprehensive state hiking guide currently available in the United States. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Pleasant Read along with interesting insider tidbits 5
I actually bought this as a gift for a friend and then had to return it due to the fact that the recipient already owned it - but I flipped through it and found it to have a lovely account of life in Provence and Paris. It has detailed - though sometimes random - photos. You get a glimpse into the French attitude and ideal and it helps understand the French psyche - makes you really appreciate and admire the French! I have been to Paris but this book makes me yearn for Provence too. It is based on one person's (the author) experiences but you feel like you can relate and the writing style is just so pleasant and draws in all five senses. However, there is nothing deep or truly insightful here, so don't expect that. A light read.

    I, me, mine...1
I had hoped the book was written to inspire a trip to France and explore the French lifestyle. Really, the writing left me unable to appreciate the lush photos; so self absorbed and boastful. My first ever return to Amazon.

    Virtual trip to Paris5
If you don't have the time or money to go to Paris, this is the next best thing. The photos are dreamy and really wonderful. Put on French music, poor a glass of wine and your there!!!

Walking the Bible: A Photographic Journey

"The process of gathering these images reminded me of the Bible's effortless ability to reinvent itself for each generation and each new way of searching."
    —Bruce Feiler

Its stories may be the best known in the world, but its locations have long been a mystery. Where did Noah's ark land? Where did Moses receive the Ten Commandments? Where are the lost cities of Sodom and Gomorrah? Now, in Walking the Bible: A Photographic Journey, New York Times bestselling author Bruce Feiler offers an unprecedented heart-stirring adventure through the landscape of some of history's most storied events.

Featuring Bruce Feiler's own photography as well as his selections from professional collections, Walking the Bible: A Photographic Journey brings together breathtaking vistas, intimate portraits, and fascinating panoramas, providing firsthand access to the inscrutable land where three of the world's great religions were born—and finally puts a face on the stories that have long inspired the human spirit.

Over several years, Feiler traveled nearly ten thousand miles through the deserts of the Middle East, which led first to his runaway national bestseller Walking the Bible. This new illustrated book follows his route, offering a thrilling photographic voyage through the actual places of some of the Bible's most memorable events—from the heights of Mount Ararat, where Noah's ark landed, to the desert outpost in Turkey, where Abraham first heard the words of God, to the summit where Moses overlooked the Promised Land.

Walking the Bible: A Photographic Journey chronicles a landscape that nurtured the relationship between humans and the divine, breathing new meaning into stories that have been a timeless source of inspiration.

Book was very interesting and useful in explaining the culture diffrences in the region.

    beautiful book, great gift5
I purchased this book last year as a Christmas gift for my grandmother. The photos are lovely and the accompanying text proved just right for a non-reader - interesting captions and short readable paragraphs, nothing lengthy. She was very happy with it and later said it was "beautiful and interesting to read and look through". Several of us enjoyed looking through it on Christmas day, and we were all impressed with it overall.

    Cigar Companion3
I was disappointed as it was just like reading Cigar Aficionado, which I feel is not the best cigar mag out there.

    The new(er?) cigar companion2
I bought this book to replace one by the same title and was dissapointed that it bears no resemblance to the 3rd edition that I had lost. While it is a handsome book, I was ultimately disappointed. What was a clear and concise review of many cigars widely available has become a very limited survey of a few cigars many of which are not easily obtainable. Most frustratingly, the reviewers will describe a certain stick as "the best of this manufacturer" and then go on to review a different offering from the same company without further reference to the cigar they deemed the most desireable. While the section on rare cigars makes for an interesting read, this seems more like a book for cigar admirers rather than one for buyers and smokers. I had hoped to find a book to help me make informed buying decisions. I plan to buy the 3rd edition-used!

    Cigar Companion5
Great book with loads of info. Great for the beginner just getting into cigars for the first time. Very helpful backround info on the brands as well as tips on storing, buying, and lighting. A great book all around.

Welcome to New Auburn, Wisconsin, where the local vigilante is a farmer's wife armed with a pistol and a Bible, the most senior member of the volunteer fire department is a cross-eyed butcher with one kidney and two ex-wives (both of whom work at the only gas station in town), and the back roads are haunted by the ghosts of children and farmers. From Publishers Weekly
When writer Perry returned to his tiny childhood town, New Auburn, Wisc., after 12 years away, he joined the village's volunteer fire and rescue department. Six years later, he'd begun to understand at last that to truly live in a place, you must give your life to that place. These charming, discursive essays are loosely structured around the calls Perry responds to as a volunteer EMT, including everything from a collision at the local Laundromat to heart attacks, fires and suicides. Perry's mosaic of smalltown life also paints charming portraits of the town's memorable characters, such as the One-Eyed Beagle, another firefighter. Perry's insights into the small-town mentality come from apparent contemplation, and he writes about them with good humor, in prose reminiscent of Rick Bragg's: "The old man says he had a woozy spell, and so he took some nitroglycerin pills. This is like saying you had high blood pressure so you did your taxes." In spite of an enormous surprise in the final chapter, the book's lack of central conflict leaves it feeling desultory, like a collection of good magazine pieces rather than a propulsive chronicle of quirky small-towners a la John Berendt's Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Still, there are moments in which Perry achieves an unforced lyricism: Rescue work is like jazz. Improvisation based on fundamentals.
Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

    From Booklist
Being a volunteer EMT is no small challenge, even in a town as small as New Auburn, Wisconsin. Perry mixes his tales of heroic rescues with his stories of small-town life. His book opens with his team attempting to rescue a teenage girl from a disastrous car wreck on a dangerous bend of road. As part of the volunteer fire department, Perry--along with his brother and mother-- pulls people from mangled cars and answers 911 calls from critically ill people. He also relates how New Auburn got its name (after going through three others), and shares the lives of his fellow volunteers, such as Beagle, a man who can't use the town's only gas station because both of his ex-wives work there. He details the technicalities of being a volunteer--the many terminologies one needs to memorize, and also crucial, life-saving techniques, such as CPR and controlling a house fire by puncturing a hole in its roof. Tragic at times, funny at others, Perry's memoir will appeal to anyone curious about small-town life. Kristine Huntley

This is a quietly devastating book--intimate and disarming and lovely. -- Adrienne Miller, Esquire

    Customer Reviews

    Worth the time to visit4
In many ways this book deserves the highest praise: well written, thought provoking, and in some cases very funny. Yet at times seemed justified for an average rating because it did seem to drag and Mr. Perry chose to wordsmith just a bit too much for me. However, I believe the book can offer every reader something of value and would recommend you take the time to visit Mr. Perry and the town of New Auburn.

It should be pointed out that the book isn't intended for the weak. Perry's story's are graphic and hard hitting and if death bothers you; enter cautiously. From a personal perspectives this made the book for me and the authors ability to make me feel a part of each scenario added to my enjoyment.

I travel on occasion on Route 53 heading North to Duluth.... I plan on stopping to take a look and catch me some food at the local diner. Thanks Michael for sharing your stories.

    Country Bumpkin5
Michael Perry's every page drips with humor, intrigue, and dexterity. He is truly a master of words! His simple country bumpkin way of life stands juxtaposed to his extreme intellect--a beautiful combination that makes his writing style quite unique and thoroughly enjoyable. Even if the story seems at times a monotonous New Auburn history lesson, one should read it for the sheer joy of watching Perry turn a phrase.

    A Heartfelt Portrait of Small-Town Life5
Since reading this book, Michael Perry has quickly become one of my favorite authors. His writing style is humorous but at the same time heartfelt and sincere. Population 485 is about Michael's return to his hometown and his adventures on the volunteer fire department. The people in the town are the characters and by the end of the book, you feel as if you've know them yourself.

    A wonderful resource5
A beautiful book with a really lovely combination of descriptions and pictures. The pictures are breathtaking without being flashy and the cover is gorgeous.

    Too flashy for me3
I ordered the book understanding that it would be a feast of color and activity (that's India, after all), but I found it to be visual overkill. I had also hoped for DK's signature superb display of information, but it felt like a more standard approach. The real clincher was the cover--it's a sculptured display, with textured fabric in the green and a recessed color photo. I just thought about holding that contrived cover--and how it might wear if the book were well-used--and I decided to send it back. I returned it and am glad I did. The pics are beautiful, but it's all too flashy for me.

    Whet your travel appetite4
I found The Travel Book by Lonely Planet to be an intriguing book. Keep in mind that it is small in height but certainly not in thickness. The book has 887 pages and is intended to be a type of reference book, not a travel guide. The idea was to spend four pages on each country in the world and offer the reader enough information and pictures both to entice their imagination and to function as a starting point for selecting a trip. The book covers 231 countries plus 13 bonus destinations. Admittedly, four pages per country are not enough to educate you about a destination but it can certainly whet your appetite. Pick the book up once in a while and read about a country you have just heard mentioned in the news. Look up places your friends are visiting. The book can serve as a good starting point.
For each country the following sections are used:
    A paragraph introduction
    Best Time to Visit
    Essential Experiences
Getting Under the Skin (Suggestions for additional media resources)
In a Word (Greetings or commonly used expressions)
Trademarks (products associated with the country)
    Surprises

They also include a broad scale map of each country showing important towns. Then five or six photos are shown for each country.

All in all, I find The Travel Book to be useful and interesting. Lonely Planet has come up with a good idea.

    A Good Coffee Table Book3
Ok, one thing this book is not, it is NOT for the person who travels alot. This is one thick book. Very nice photography with little blurbs about what is in the photos. Each country gets two pages to highlight it. That's it. Like I said, this is a nice book to have hanging around an office, on a table or just to flip through when you're boored.
Here is an example, Brunei. It get one big photo filling the left hand page, two smaller photos on the right and info on the best time to visit, a list of essential experiences (five items), tells you the capital city, total population, area in square miles and language. Nothing in depth, just a nice overview.

    Quick travel5
This compact book is full of wonderful photos and facts about every country in the world as well as other interesting travel locations. I appreciated the world map, which marks every country, as well as the individual maps on the countries' pages. Each locations also provides essential facts, such as capital, language, and population, and gives recommended reading and listening choices for those who want to learn more about each place. It's a great way to take a fast trip around the world while sitting at home or to provide a stack of travel brochures from which to choose your next vacation destination.
