    100 Classic Colorado Hikes4
Great book. I have the earlier edition...got this one for the updated features. Make use of it while hiking annually in Colorado.

    Favorite Hiking Book4
I had the older version of this book and absolutely loved it. I've planned many weekend trips and vacations based on the hikes in this book. I've never disagreed with the authur about a hike being one of the top 100 in Colorado.
The new version has elevation profiles which are very nice. However, I don't care for the new maps. The old book had maps which were very easy to see. The new edition has topo maps which I think are too crowded and busy to be able to make anything out. I can't tell if there are streams next to the trails, which is very important to me as I hike with a dog and it's usually the first thing I look at.
There are several new hikes: Bear Peak (Boulder), Lake Isabel (W. of Denver), Mount Falcon (Denver), Devil Head (Sedalia). Red Rock Canyon (Colo. Sprgs.), North Cheyenne Canyon (Colo. Spgs.), French Pass (Jefferson/Fairplay), Tater Head Loop (Crawford), Mosca Pass (Alamosa), No Name Lake (Antonito), Rabbit Ears Mesa (Grand Junction) and Sarvis Creek (Steamboat).

    From School Library Journal
Grade 5-9–This oversized novelty book has a gold cover with red, plastic, "jewel" inlays to add to the drama. Written as an amateur Egyptologist's travel journal from 1926, each spread covers a distinct area of antiquity and is mainly factual in content, except for the author's chatty asides. The type resembles that of an old manual typewriter and the photos, reproductions, and sketches make the journal seem more realistic. There are papyrus pull-outs, pop-up art, minibooks, and fold-out maps and an envelope in the back with period postcards, ticket stubs, etc. Libraries will find the book useful for teaching journal writing, but difficult to keep together.–Carol Wichman, formerly at Northridge Local Schools, Dayton, OH

    From Booklist
Gr. 3-6. Bound in gold and embellished with ruby-red "jewels," this follow-up to Dr. Ernest Drake's Dragonology (2003)--which, like Dragonology, credits a fictional character as its author, leaving those responsible for its written content unacknowledged--purports to be the scrapbook of an amateur archaeologist gone missing during the height of 1920s Egyptomania. As in Dragonology, pull-out documents, sundry flaps, and other novelty elements (including a "sample of mummy cloth" and a game of Egyptian checkers) will have children breathlessly anticipating each page turn. Even so, this seems to lack the cohesive artistic purpose that distinguished its predecessor. The images often appear overly slick, compromising the notion that they have been sketched on the fly by members of the expedition, and a fantastical frame story about the "lost tomb of Osiris" undermines the informational content, despite an awkward concluding attempt to separate fact from fiction. Dragonology's broad crossover success probably won't be reincarnated here, but the allure of the subject matter and the luxe packaging is likely to be considerable. Jennifer Mattson

    Excellent!5
What makes it good is historical accuracy paired with the explorative nature of the book. It is colorful, full of pictures and many useful/random tidbits.

    Fun, Intriguing Book5
This is a great book for kids who enjoy interactive creative reads. The extras are always nice to accompany these books. The Egyptology book was snapped up by my students and they loved it. It was quite enjoyable to them and they read more than they often do in books. The big eye was really interesting to them.

    good book5
lots of good information for the younger reader. Also a good segway into more involved books.

    Amazon.com Review
Horwitz has the touch, the ability to astutely capture the ludicrous essence of an experience while filling in all the pertinent socio-historic details. He chews qat with the Yemenis, plays soccer with the Sudanese Dinka refugees and listens to an endless refrain of "You are the perfume of Iraq, oh Saddam" in Baghdad. Horwitz' eye and wit are equally sharp, and his book is an exceptionally good read.

    From Library Journal
Horwitz ( One for the Road , Random, 1988), now a Wall Street Journal reporter, covered the Middle East in the late 1980s and returned to Baghdad in August 1990 following the invasion of Kuwait. With a sense of humor and eye for detail, he presents the turbulent Middle East from the vantage point of the "man in the street," whom we meet in traditional Yemeni villages, sophisticated Cairo, regimented Libya, disintegrating Sudan, a luxury hotel in the United Arab Emirates, and a seedy Baghdad nightclub. Among other adventures, the author attends the funeral of the Ayatollah Khomeini in Tehran. A Jewish American, he shows empathy for Arabs in the Middle East. The Kuwait crisis will focus attention on the two chapters on Iraq. In comparison with Christopher Dickey's Ex pats ( LJ 6/15/90) and Charles Glass's Tribes with Flags ( LJ 4/1/90), Horwitz's book better captures the point of view of the average person and covers more territory, omitting only Syria from his itinerary. A valuable and timely acquisition for public libraries.

    Culture Meets Culture4
BAGHDAD WITHOUT A MAP is a series of articles Tony Horwitz wrote while trying to spark a freelance journalism career in the Middle East. The title is somewhat misleading as the articles cover a wide spectrum of Middle Eastern countries.

Horwitz does not always have an assignment as was the case when he visited Yemen, one of the most unusual countries in the book. Almost everyone in Yemen is high on Qat, a hallucinogenic shrub that the inhabitants chew like tobacco. Horwitz, who's always game for anything, samples the shrub, losing the feeling in his arms and legs when he does.

One of the most enlightening episodes was when Horwitz got an assignment to cover the tanker war on the "Strait of Hoummos." Horwitz hitches a ride on a sixty-foot Bombay boat. On board, Horwitz met the ship's engineer, a man named Jesudasyn "with the unflinching bluntness of a four-year-old." Jesudasyn wanted to know if it was true that men and women lived in America without getting married, and, if so, how could the women still be virgins when they married. In India the woman must be a virgin. They go on to discuss reincarnation and the use of condoms. This conversation goes on for all of two pages, but with culture meeting culture, there was enough material for a book of its own.

Cairo, Egypt, was almost a home base for Horwitz and his wife, noted author Geraldine Brooks. There's a concept called "Malesh" in Egypt, loosely translated to mean "whatever." Even new building in Cairo begin to fall apart almost immediately as there isn't much maintenance. There are constant blackouts and the elevators don't work in the apartment buildings. The idea that you couldn't do anything about these inconveniences anyway was prevalent in Egyptian society. After awhile even Horwitz began to experience "Malesh."

Most of the places Horwitz visited, such as The Sudan and Libya, were pretty desolate places, but then there was the Arab Emirates, one of the richest places on earth where the natives have free health care, free education, and an assurance of a job, if they want one. Guest workers outnumber natives five to one. Dubai's port was "duty free, regulation free, everything free." Compared to The Sudan, Dubai would be Heaven, The Sudan hell.

Tony Horwitz won the Pulitzer for his travelogue style writing. Other writers might emulate his ability to communicate with the native peoples, despite his inability to speak the language in some cases.

When it comes down to it, we're all the same4
Bagdad Without a Map is the account of a journalist working in the Middle East for some odd number of years in the 1990's. In this book he published the notes that are not really suitable for any journalistic account, but as such it probably adds more insights in the area then any format account would be. It seems Horwitz is able to get more out of your average interviewee for most seem to be sharing more then they normally would, even in countries in which Horwitz's home land and religion aren't on the list of biggest mates. Horwitz created an excellent balance between proper journalism (as in gathering facts) and a more personal account of the matter without a preoccupied opinion. Plus it comes with a pleasant writing style. While reading these it seems the people in the middle east are pretty much occupied by the same troubles and ambitions as westerners do, it's just that they are being governed by quite a different system.

    You'll embarrass yourself reading this.5
This may be the best travelogue I've ever read. Horwitz has an uncanny ability with words, to paint the scene and make the reader feel like they are there with him. I felt myself transported back to the countries I have visited, and can affirm that they were accurately represented. Horwitz is complimentary to the myriad cultures of the Middle East while being honest about the difficulties of the countries. And his adventures would be completely implausible, if they had been in a novel. The book is laugh-out-loud funny. I mean that. I found myself on the bus unable to stop chortling, or explain myself to the passengers around me. Looking for a good time? Read this book.

    About the Author
Dale Coyner's journeys through the Appalachians began out of a curiosity for what was "around the next bend." He came to riding later than some, purchasing his first motorcycle, a Yamaha Radian, after he finished college. He credits the open, freewheeling nature of motorcycling with firing a sense of wonderment about his surroundings that led to rediscovering his native region. He shares his best finds with you in this book.

For many of the tours in this volume, Dale relied on his trusty Honda Gold Wing. He's not sure if it was the size of the Wing, the pop-up camper he was pulling, or the bright red Aerostitch suit that garnered the most friendly smiles in his travels, but he got a lot of them. His current ride is a Honda GL-1800.

    excellent book for motorcyle enthusiasts5
great book detailing not just roads, but local custom and color for the mid-atlantic area from PA down to the Carolinas and eastern Tennessee.

numerouse routes from a central point in each region are detailed and the local dining, lodging, and other points of interest are detailed in an interesting style of writing.

useful for anyone who wants to tour the mid-atlantic region and take their time doing it...

A "Must" for anyone traveling the Appalachians5
I just finished a ride of a little over 1000 miles from my home in NJ to and through WV and VA. I used this book to guide me on some really terrific roads and through some truly beautiful areas. This was the first long, extended ride I've ever taken and it was in large measure due to the "encouragement" expressed through this well written resource. If you're thinking of traveling through the Appalachians then I would recommend that you purchase and pour through this well written book before you go.

    Invaluable!5
I just got back from a near-1000 mile trip through the Appalachians. I used this book to guide me through some thoroughly fascinating and beautiful areas -- the author, Dale Coyner, has create a terrific resource! I am not exaggerating when I say that VA Route 39 has changed my view of the eastern United States (I lived in the West -- Alaska, Utah, and Arizona -- until 2000). I'm sure I won't be the first, but I've set a goal to do all 36 rides in the book.

I showed this to the clerk at the bookstore at the Peaks of Otter wayside on the Blue Ridge Parkway. She's a rider, so she took the name of the book down with considerable enthusiasm and pledged to talk to the manager about stocking the book in the store. It seems strange NOT to have your book on the shelves in such a rider's paradise!

The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid: A Memoir

The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid: A Memoir

The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid: A Memoir

From one of the most beloved and bestselling authors in the English language, a vivid, nostalgic, and utterly hilarious memoir of growing up in the 1950s

Bill Bryson was born in the middle of the American century—1951—in the middle of the United States—Des Moines, Iowa—in the middle of the largest generation in American history—the baby boomers. As one of the best and funniest writers alive, he is perfectly positioned to mine his memories of a totally all-American childhood for 24-carat memoir gold. Like millions of his generational peers, Bill Bryson grew up with a rich fantasy life as a superhero. In his case, he ran around his house and neighborhood with an old football jersey with a thunderbolt on it and a towel about his neck that served as his cape, leaping tall buildings in a single bound and vanquishing awful evildoers (and morons)—in his head—as "The Thunderbolt Kid."

Using this persona as a springboard, Bill Bryson re-creates the life of his family and his native city in the 1950s in all its transcendent normality—a life at once completely familiar to us all and as far away and unreachable as another galaxy. It was, he reminds us, a happy time, when automobiles and televisions and appliances (not to mention nuclear weapons) grew larger and more numerous with each passing year, and DDT, cigarettes, and the fallout from atmospheric testing were considered harmless or even good for you. He brings us into the life of his loving but eccentric family, including affectionate portraits of his father, a gifted sportswriter for the local paper and dedicated practitioner of isometric exercises, and OF his mother, whose job as the home furnishing editor for the same paper left her little time for practicing the domestic arts at home. The many readers of Bill Bryson’s earlier classic, A Walk in the Woods, will greet the reappearance in these pages of the immortal Stephen Katz, seen hijacking literally boxcar loads of beer. He is joined in the Bryson gallery of immortal characters by the demonically clever Willoughby brothers, who apply their scientific skills and can-do attitude to gleefully destructive ends.

Warm and laugh-out-loud funny, and full of his inimitable, pitch-perfect observations, The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid is as wondrous a book as Bill Bryson has ever written. It will enchant anyone who has ever been young.

    From Publishers Weekly
Though billed as memoir, Bryson's follow-up to A Short History of Nearly Everything can only be considered one in the broadest sense. Sure, it's filled with Bryson's recollections of his Des Moines, Iowa, childhood. But it's also a clear foray into Jean Shepherd territory, where nostalgia for one's youth is suffused with comic hyperbole: "All sneakers in the 1950s had over seven dozen lace holes," we're told; though all the toys were crummy, it didn't matter because boys had plenty of fun throwing lit matches at each other; and mimeograph paper smelled wonderful. The titular Thunderbolt Kid is little more than a recurring gag, a self-image Bryson invokes to lash out at the "morons" that plague every child's existence. At other times, he offers a glib pop history of the decade, which works fine when discussing teen culture or the Cold War but falls flat when trying to rope in the Civil Rights movement. And sometimes he just wants to reminisce about his favorite TV shows or the Dick and Jane books. The book is held together by sheer force of personality—but when you've got a personality as big as Bryson's, sometimes that's enough. (Oct. 17)

    From School Library Journal
Adult/High School–The Thunderbolt Kid was born in the 1950s when six-year-old Bryson found a mysterious, scratchy green sweater with a satiny thunderbolt across the chest. The jersey bestowed magic powers on the wearer–X-ray vision and the power to zap teachers and babysitters and deflect unwanted kisses from old people. These are the memoirs of that Kid, whose earthly parents were not really half bad–a loving mother who didn't cook and was pathologically forgetful, but shared her love of movies with her youngest child, and a dad who was the greatest baseball writer that ever lived and took his son to dugouts and into clubhouses where he met such famous players as Stan Musial and Willie Mays. Simpler times are conveyed with exaggerated humor; the author recalls the middle of the last century in the middle of the country (Des Moines, IA), when cigarettes were good for you, waxy candies were considered delicious, and kids were taught to read with Dick and Jane. Students of the decade's popular culture will marvel at the insular innocence described, even as the world moved toward nuclear weapons and civil unrest. Bryson describes country fairs and fantastic ploys to maneuver into the tent to see the lady stripper, playing hookey, paper routes, church suppers, and more. His reminiscences will entertain a wide audience.–Jackie Gropman, Chantilly Regional Library, Fairfax County, VA

    From Bookmarks Magazine
Bill Bryson (A Short History of Nearly Everything, **** July/Aug 2003) clearly has a great deal of fun recalling and judiciously exaggerating stories from his youth. Reviewers particularly enjoy his focus on the good times, his fondness for his parents, and his ability to find the humor in such dry topics as defense spending. Those who have experienced the 1950s or the Midwest will find a great deal to appreciate about Bryson's reminiscences; those who haven't will still get most of the jokes, many of which rely on such universal (if not universally appreciated) sources of humor as cheap candy, the elderly, and flatulence.

    a good laugh5
Even though I am about 20 years too young to get some of the jokes, I still laughed myself silly listening. I got a nice history lesson on Des Moines too, near where I was living then. I passed it on to my parents who enjoyed more of the 50's humor. I hadn't seen dad laugh like that since "A Christmas Story"!! I gave it to them with a map of Des Moines, Mom enjoyed looking up all the sites.

The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid: A Memoir 5
Easily Bryson's funniest work, imo. To reduce the chance of choking or spitting up food on a friend, don't read this while eating. It's that darn funny. The audio version, which Bryson reads, is even funnier.

    Such fun!5
After reading A Short History of Nearly Everything and the biography Mr. Bryson did of Shakespeare, I read Made In America. I now consider myself hooked. I loved this particular volume for its period detail, its humor, and for helping me remember parts of my own childhood. In the next few weeks and months, I intend to read my way through all of Mr. Bryson's books -- or I may listen to audio versions. For those of you who haven't heard his voice, all I can say is that it's a mixture of American Midwest and British English. His voice fascinates me -- and I think he's a great reader of his own work.

Maps and a compass are the hiker's insurance against getting lost in the woods. But you'll need to be able to do more with these tools than locate Fresno or head south. Seidman, a world traveler and master kayaker, charts the subtleties of map interpretation (especially the ups and downs of contour lines) and offers instruction on how to use a compass for taking bearings and walking a course. Other techniques for finding your way in the woods are explained: estimating distances by finger angles or winking, adjusting your compass for true north, and finding directions from the motions of the sun and stars. By the way, forget about moss growing on the north side of trees; lichens like moisture, which more often depends on prevailing winds and weather than direction. This book is filled with illustrations and practical advice to keep the careful trekker on the right path. Even armchair travelers will find some valuable advice here. Jennifer Henderson

The book is well organized and informative. Although I have not yet finished reading the entire book, the parts I have read were well written. There were numerous illustrations to help explain the text. The appendix lists other books and sources of related information.

    Essential to using a compass5
I have been using a compass for many years but I always thought there was much more than I knew. I went to using GPS for all my navigation a few years ago. I purchased 3 books on compass usage a couple years ago after my wife and I broke my GPS during a snowstorm in the mountains of Colorado leaving us in a bad mess.
I quickly ran through the other 2, and although they were good they were not as complete as this one. I have carried it with me for 2 years now. I find that what I think I have learned is easily wrong when out in the field so I now carry it with me and practice the stuff I am unsure of. Some people think this book is wordy but I find it fascinating. I reread certain chapters over and over, finding I have glossed over something that is more important than I originally thought.
If you want to trust a compass this is the book for you, but plan on spending some time with it.
I am buying this book for my son-in law as he relies exclusively on a GPS.
I guess the only thing I disagree with is a statement that a compass almost never breaks, as I have several that have been retired over breakage. I carry 2-3 with me now as I guess I'm not disposed to trust any one navigational instrument.

    Choose another book1
For those looking for a concise guide to map and compass use, look elsewhere. This book is rambling and wordy.

    Amazon.com Review
Initially specializing in Asia guidebooks, the Lonely Planet Travel Survival Kit series has long been a favorite of budget travelers all over the globe. Lonely Planet guides have a reputation for plainspoken and practical advice as well as thoughtful writing about history and culture, and Lonely Planet Mexico is no exception. Complementing the information about sights, accommodations, and food are extensive background notes about each region's notable past and present characteristics, from cuisine to geography to art. (Check out the full-color illustrated insert on Mexican artesanías, or handicrafts.) One note: this edition came out during the worst of the peso devaluation crisis, so the prices quoted may vary widely from the actual amount. It's best to rely on another guidebook for exact prices (try one that comes out every year), but for basic comparative information, Lonely Planet is a good name to trust.

Good, but not really up to date3
I just came back from a trip over the Yucatan peninsula. In general, the choice, description and evaluation of places is good, as in most of the lonely planets. However, the choice of hotels and restaurants, at least in the budget and mid-range section was only helpful in maybe 50% of cases. The other 50% were rather epxensive, no longer existing or just bad tips. Obvious and locally known good places to stay for the night (which are cited in other books) where missing for almost all the towns we went. In general, the prices in the book are completely outdated, in reality everything was more expensive by 20-100%. Over all, it seems that either the tourism industry in Yucatan and Quintana Roo has changed immensly in a very short time period, or this section of the guide has just not been updated for a while...

What a joy to travel with this guide book5
Just came back from three weeks in the Western Central Highlands of Mexico. My first impression, what a joy to travel with this guide book. As an experienced budget traveler, I look for the following in guide books (1) detail city maps, (2) budget hotel listings, (3) detail information on getting from the bus station to the interesting part of town. After all, it's easy to arrive in a bus station and hail a cab; it takes a little more effort to take public transportation. This guide gave me the information needed to do this, plus the money saved will easily pay for this book and heighten your travel experience.
I look at this book like a good friend giving me advice on the best places to go and the experiences not to miss. Kudos to the "Highlights" that LP has incorporated into each travel section, it made me read those sections more thoroughly. In conclusion, the writing is fresh and full of emotion along with the accurate travel details listed above made this the best Mexican travel book I've ever used.

    Dissappointing2
Its OK, I guess, but to me a bit dissappointing compared to previous Lonely Planet Guides that I have purchased. You can tell that it was written by different people. Not up to the usual standards as far as reviews of lodgings and night clubs, restaurants, etc. Lonely Planet has changed -and not for the better.

    About the Author

Allen O'Bannon grew up in Portland, Oregon and while he dabbled a little in skiing and winter camping in the Cascades of Oregon it was really upon moving to the mountains of Wyoming and Idaho at the end of the ‘80’s that he began what has become a life long passion. Allen has worked for the National Outdoor Leadership School since 1987 and spent four seasons working for the United States Antarctic Program. He prefers cold to heat and is miserable at the thought of global warming. He would love some cold weather consulting work.

Mike Clelland is a NOLS instructor and illustrator who studied Mad magazine rather than go to art school. He has numerous books with his name on them, including Allen & Mike's Telemark Tips, Allen & Mike's Really Cool Backpackin' Book, and Lighten Up! and is the illustrator for the very popular Tech Tips in Climbing Magazine.

Drop the knee - Not the bomb!5
I'm the illustrator of this groovy book. If the following sounds like shameless self promotion...it is. 123 tips in this UPDATED book! I personally subjected my ski partners to my less than subtal research technique, I bugged 'em by asking every concievable question and making 'em try (almost) every tip in the book. The winter of 97/98 involved getting up in the morning and going backcountry skiing, then coming home and drawing bizzare cartoons of what subtal telemark insights I uncovered durring the day. The result was the first edition of this book. People actually stop me on the street and thank me for improving their tele-skiing! Then, I spent the next decade practicing and refining NEW tips for this book. Now available, reafdy for your ski season. For example there is a funny cartoon of a guy puting a penny in his [...]...really! Strange but true, this is a valuable tool to perfect this beautiful style of skiing. 'nuff said...Mike Clelland!

The Awesome learned from this BOOK!5
When I ask a very awesome and strong tele skier to teach me; she recommended this book. After having reviewed the basics - I can't wait for SNOW to do all the lessons that apply to me!!

Still a great book, but a lot of overlap4
A great source for beginner and intermediate level telemarkers. As the title would suggest, this "revised" version has a lot of overlap with the previous edition. For the price, however, it is worth picking up the new edition and gifting your old dog-eared copy of the original to a friend.

Flying the Alaska Wild: The Adventures and Misadventures of an Alaska Bush Pilot

Flying the Alaska Wild: The Adventures and Misadventures of an Alaska Bush Pilot

Flying the Alaska Wild: The Adventures and Misadventures of an Alaska Bush Pilot

"Flying the Alaska Wild" is true grit stuff: a collection of fascinating stories about the rough-and-tumble life of an Alaskan bush pilot--straight from the pilot's seat. Recounting twenty-plus years of adventures, skilled storyteller Mort Mason presents his own death-defying tales, and also tells the legendary stories of other old-time bush pilots.

Flying through the wildly unpredictable weather conditions and unforgiving terrain of the Big Empty--where bush pilots find few paved runways, control towers, friendly voices on their silent radios, navigational aids, and few places to drop in for coffee and fuel for their flimsy planes--Mason honed his skill--and his luck--in a profession that just a few have the stamina to endure. Here, he recounts his more memorable flights and the conditions, circumstances, and admitted errors that made them so. For pilots and airplane buffs; Alaska buffs; hunters, guides, and outdoors enthusiasts.

    About the Author
Mort Mason has written about Alaska hunting, sport fishing, and back country flying for more than 25 years. Mason flew for 18,000 plus hours in the formidable and unforgiving outback of the Alaska bush country. He and his wife, Peggy, started the successful periodical, "Alaska Outdoors"; he has also written several short stories of the mystery and suspense genre, and articles about the Alaska outback. This is his first book; his next is in progress. Although he's semi-retired, Mason occasionally tows banners along the golden beaches of the Atlantic Ocean.

If your going to Alaska or just dreaming about it this is a must read!!!5
I have been to Alaska 3 times in the last 10 years as a ground based tourist and am planning a trip up to the "Big Empty" this summer with some friends and wanted to do the sightseeing by air. I am a pilot and wanted to tie in some Alaska float plane and bush flying training into the trip. I wanted to know more about flying in Alaska before I just went out and booked some instruction, so I decided to pick up "Flying the Alaska Wild."

What a great find! The book was filled with great stories about Mort Mason and his trials and tribulations as a Bush Pilot in Alaska. My jaw was on the floor throughout the book. How did Mort survive all of these adventures? Great read! Highly recommend it!

The most amazing thing happened after I read the book. Mort left his email address in the back of the book and I emailed him about my upcoming trip. He gave me all sort of tips about the trip.

Mort is not only a great bush pilot, but also a scholar and a gentleman. I true ambassador to the "Big Empty."

    Thanks Mort!

Looking forward to your new book in February.

    Fantastic Book!5
Oh, wow! This book is fantastic! Mort Mason's personality is hilarious, and he does an amazing job making life as an Alaska bush pilot come to life. He imbues the book with humor and warmth, isn't afraid to make fun of himself, and he leaves the reader with a true understanding of how Alaska and bush flying can become a part of your soul and your identity. He's an amazing writer, a gifted story teller and, apparently, a hell of a pilot as well. His book makes me want to sit down on a wooden swing on the back deck of an Alaska cabin and listen to him tell stories all night long. He gives you good technical info on flying, but it's not dry and it's easy to understand, even for the non-flier (like me). An awesome read!

    Good, not great4
I enjoyed the book. I'm a flight simulator fan. The book is interesting and only a bit technical. Well written.

    A MUST HAVE5
I LIKE THIS GUIDE BOOK BECAUSE IT IS EASY TO READ AND UNDERSTAND. MY PARENTS USE IT TOO. GREAT SUGGESTIONS ON RIDES. HOTELS, AND EVEN DINING. THIS BOOK IS FUN TO USE FOR YOUR UPCOMING VISIT TO DISNEY.

just like the last year's edition3
This book did not have much new in it from the 2 previous years editions. I thought it would have reviewed the new eateries, but it only mentioned them, no review.Overall it is still a good book. It rates the scare factor and height requirements for rides.Good hints and ideas for "strategies" for yor days at the park

Good comprehensive guide, however some specifics are incorrect or outdated3
This was a good overall guide and gave some info that other guides did not contain. The info on the rides and shows is very informative, with info on ride times, line length, etc.

However, it found some errors in specific information. For example, on the Sea World section there is info about behind the scene tours, those were for 2008 only and the phone number listed in the book was for a title company, not Sea World Orlando.

    Nicely Done5
We drive a 700 mile radius from beautiful Astoria Oregon and found that the climate in the San Francisco area is the best on the coast, as our temp range is from 35 low to 70 high, and it only rains 22 inches a year. We use our Vanagon to STAY FREE in rest areas and casinos, and almost free in state and federal camping spots. We use REST AREA REVIEW and AMERICAN CASINO GUIDE and this camping book filled in the blank spots.

    Great Book!5
I have no questions and hesitations when it comes to Tom Strienstra. I regard his ratings highly and the information provided are very helpful.

I love this camping guide! I have purchased several (4+) editions of this book to have the most up-to-date info available. I refer to it often and highly recommend it to all campers as a great resource guide.

    Good Guide4
A little on the slim side, this is not for those who want an encyclopedic, thorough guide. There are few photos and cultural/historical notes. On the other hand, there is little fat and most of the information you need is there. The reviews of hotels and restaurants are very useful and trustworthy. It is aimed at the budget traveler, but not necessarily the backpacker. It is also very up-to-date. Recommended.

    Informative Travel Insights4
Used in conjunction with other Mexico/Yucatan travel guides, The Rough Guide has been helpful in planning our upcoming vacation. I like the fact there are specifics in the book. Where the post office is located, an ATM, gas stations, good restaurants, etc.
