From Booklist
Bruns, founder of a successful software company, decided to follow his new girlfriend, who worked on a luxury cruise liner, and enjoy a high-seas adventure. His plan, to get hired on as a member of the crew, seemed simple enough, but Bruns quickly discovered he had no idea what he was getting himself into. This is a very funny, behind-the-scenes exploration of a cruise ship. Imagine a combination of Innocents Abroad and The Love Boat, with a dash of Peyton Place, and you’ll have a good idea of what to expect: lots of humorous fumbling about as men and women of various nationalities mold themselves into an efficient team without stepping on each others’ cultural toes; the glitz and polished shine of a seagoing luxury hotel (contrasted with the sometimes-disgusting living conditions of the crew); and plenty of shenanigans, including raucous parties and, of course, sexual escapades. Although this isn’t an exposé of cruise lines so much as a lighthearted adventure, readers planning a cruise will glean lots of useful information, and cruise veterans may find themselves looking at their familiar turf in a new, slightly suspicious way. --David Pitt

Loved It![]()
As a hospitality professional I truly enjoyed the inside of the biz on a cruise ship. He does a great job of being descriptive of his work and his after work activities. Always wanted to experience ship life and this is the closest I'm going to get. Hoping for a sequel.
A good read![]()
Well I was on the Carnival Conquest May 2005(pre-Katrina) I knew what dining room and where on the lido deck he was talking about. I do feel for the cruise staff long hours and hard life. So when you cruise and get your bill don't be cheap these people live off their tips.
It was an entertaining read, my travel class teacher recommended it.So I borrowed her copy. Well written and it makes you think there is a "dark side" to every industry.

Cruise Confidential: A Hit Below the Waterline: Where the Crew Lives, Eats, Wars, and Parties. One Crazy Year Working on Cruise Ships (Travelers' Tales) I am an avid cruiser and was thrilled to come across this "behind the scenes" book. What a huge disappointment. Mostly gibberish about parties, affairs, etc. I thought we would get some real insight into what the crew really thought about their jobs, why they decided to work on the ships, etc. This was like a soap opera - I was really disappointed. Selling mine back immediately. I would love to read a real "expose" on cruise ship life.

I am pretty sure that that book will surely have a lot of secrets to reveal. I should know as I have been enjoying working on a cruise ship for quite some time now and I have to say that life with cruise ship jobs is not as simple or as hard working as everyone thinks.
